Where can I find the Township's Septic Ordinance? https://www.beckertwpsherburnecomn.gov/ordinances-zoning/page/township-ordinances
What is SSTS? Subsurface Sewage Treatment System
How long is my septic compliance good for building permits? 10 years. You must have a compliant system documented within 10 years of obtaining a building permit. If the Septic Compliance date passes before a building permit is issued, the building permit will not be issued until another septic compliance is completed and on file.
How do I get a septic compliance done? You can contact any licensed inspector of your choice. The link provided lead to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's license search system.
What happens if my system fails compliance? You will need to get the system repaired/replaced within the required deadline.
- Systems that fail for reasons noted as Imminent threat to public health and safety have 10 months to come into compliance.
- Systems that fail for reasons noted as failing to protect groundwater have 18 months to come into compliance.
What if I am selling my house, do I need a septic compliance completed? Yes, Becker Township Ordinance, in general, requires compliance inspections for property transfers for SSTS that are older than five years and if the certificate of compliance is older than three years. There are a few narrow exceptions to this regulation that can be found in the ordinance section 8.15B.
I plan to apply for a use permit that will allow for a change in use for my property (often a conditional use permit or interim use permit), will this trigger a septic compliance requirement? Possibly. Staff would be happy to assist in determination.
Can I determine if I need a use permit to operate a home based business? Yes, we have a sheet designed to help you determine what type of permit you may require.
Be sure to review the Home Based Business Ordinance as there are several types of businesses not allowed to be operated from your home.
